We are looking for a strategic and innovative Principal Scientist to lead and support our Climate Impact work programme.
Key areas of focus of the role include:
- leading in the development of relationships across the science sector to support more regular input and two way dialogue on the climate work programme
- providing key scientific and implementation advice on climate scenarios to a diverse range of stakeholders
- supporting the shaping of an overarching climate strategy which will inform the briefing to incoming Ministers, with a focus on climate projections and implications for social and economic transition/transformation over time
- providing input and advice to managed retreat
- providing advice to the development of a climate/adaptation information portal
- being across the state of scientific, technical and socio-economic knowledge on climate change
- leading on IPCC reports produced during the sixth assessment cycle.
This is an opportunity for you to play a key role in influencing positive change and work in an exciting science and advisory area.
We are open to someone joining us on a permanent, secondment or fixed term basis.

Our ideal candidate will bring:
- a tertiary qualification, certification or experience in climate science and adaptation
- experience delivering quality science advice to decision makers
- ability to communicate complex/technical scientific information to a non-technical audience
- intellectually sharp, capable, and agile you will lead, influence and manoeuvre through complex political situations effectively
- strategic leadership and intellectual capability
- strong stakeholder management and engagement skills across diverse groups
- experience working in a cross-agency environment
- a collaborative operating style
- political savvy in terms of tact, discretion and diplomacy
- coaching and mentoring experience
- an ability to apply Māori worldviews in a way that makes a meaningful difference to policy advice, partnerships, and relationships with others.
- commitment to developing your cultural capability and capacity in te ao Māori.
Most importantly, you will be passionate about looking for new and innovative ways of achieving environmental outcomes.
Whānuitanga Utu ā-Tau | Salary range
Salary range for this role is $155,491 to $190,044 pa. Appointment within this range will be based on skills and experience.
